There are many tools that are going to be added to your tool box or tool chest. These tools have a large variety of different purposes. But one type of tool that everyone needs to add to their tool box or tool chest is a tool that is used to measure length. There are several different tools that handle measurement and which one (or ones) that you choose depends entirely upon what type of projects you normally participate in. Protractors and Angle Measurement
When your project requires a finer touch and accurate angles to be done correctly, the tool that is needed is called a protractor. The many different protractors that are available on the market offer the user the ability to accurately measure angles and draw guidelines, normally for making cuts, on the materials that they are working with. There are several different types of protractors available for anyone needing this type of tool.
The protractors that are available in hardware stores and in any place that sells office or school supplies include a bevel protractor, the traditional half protractor and a newer protractor called the “Angler.” The bevel protractor is similar to the traditional half protractor with one addition. It has an arm that pivots which allows for greater accuracy with your work. The traditional half protractor is the type that schools commonly use when teaching and are the most common.
The newest protractor, the “Angler”, is very similar to the traditional half protractor with one major difference. There are measurements on both sides of this protractor. It simply takes the two separate measurements that appear on a traditional half protractor and separates them. This allows for an easier time of using the measurement when you do not have to worry about using the wrong measurement system.
Types of Rulers
While it may seem like common sense, an important tool for anyone to keep on hand is the ruler. When dealing with construction and other handy work, there are several different types of rulers that could possibly come in handy. These rulers include the standard ruler, the carpenters’ folding ruler, the tape measure, and the contraction ruler. Each of these have their own uses and may all be found within a tool chest.
The standard ruler hardly needs an explanation since it is a tool that is used beginning in elementary school but each of the others have specific uses. The carpenters’ folding ruler is one such tool that has a use that is extremely specific. This is a tool that is extremely useful when measuring wood. It also folds up so that storing it is no major issue. A similar tool is the tape measure which retracts into a coil when it is not being used. These are useful when measuring larger areas or when you do not have a standard ruler available for measuring smaller projects.
The contraction ruler is the final ruler and has a very unique purpose. This tool is made for those working with metal. The measurements on this are spaced further out than on a standard ruler. This is to compensate for the shrinking of the metal as it is being worked with.
Squares and Their Uses
The steel square or the framing square is commonly used by carpenters. This tool is made up of two arms. These two arms meet at a right angle and are normally made out of steel. The most common uses are for laying out rafters and stairs. While these are the main uses, many carpenters and contractors have found new and very unique uses for their steel squares which has made them an important part of their tool box or tool chest.
While each of these types of tools that measure lengths are very important, there are many others tools that are used to measure length available on the market. Many of these other types are available for specific requirements (such as handling fabric or upholstery) and can easily be found by anyone searching for them.
